Trip

It was 1993, I was just 15 years old. My parents worked in Saudi Arabia, in a small town called Najran, down south on the Yemen border. I visited them twice a year. There was no direct flight to Najran from India. The optimal route was on a Friday, flight from Bombay to Riyadh - I would reach by 12:30 PM local time, the next flight to Najran was at 7:00 PM. After the immigration and customs, I go over to the Domestic terminal and check-in my ticket, get the boarding pass, go to the departure lounge, wait for the announcement and call my parents to tell them that I have reached and am in the departure lounge. I have been traveling this way, all alone, for the past three years, Same flight, same schedule, same routine, nothing changed. This predictability ensured my parents that I am safe. But something changed on this trip. I noticed a girl on my way to the domestic terminal, about my age, sitting on her luggage cart and silently sobbing. Usually, I would mind my own business, but when I see a helpless pretty girl, I couldn't resist the chance to be a knight in shining armor. Her name was Dolly Burns. I found out that she was also on her way to Najran. She lost her wallet containing cash and her fathers' contact details, but somehow the passport and the ticket were safe since she had it in her hand. When she went to the Check-in counter, they told her that her flight reservation was canceled. I knew where the problem was and how to fix it. Those days, where there were no cell phones or internet, one needs to confirm their journey with the airlines at least 3 days in advance. That was the rule with Saudia Airlines. All that needs to be done was go to the ticket counter show them your ticket and they will book you on the next available flight, and that was what the clerk at the check-in counter told her to do. She did not understand what was told to her, so she decided to sit there and cry instead of asking for help or directions. In Saudi Arabia, all immigrant workers are issued a work permit called "Iqama". The dependants are supposed to carry the copy of that Iqama, thankfully she had it on her, along with her Passport and Ticket. I took her to the counter where the tickets are issued. I told her to wait in the lounge nearby while I "solve" her problem. I noticed that her ticket was paid for by the MOH - Ministry of health, same as me. Since Najran was a very small town, there was only one hospital where MoH staff would work. My father worked as an OT Anaesthesia technician and my mother was a nurse. I checked her father's Iqama and realized that he works in the same hospital as my parents. The next flight to Najran was 7 PM, my ticket was confirmed, there were enough seats for both of us to travel together. But then, I wanted to change the routine this time so that I get to spend more time with her. I knew once we reach Najran, I would not get a chance to meet regularly. I canceled my reservation and asked them to put us on the early morning flight at 4 AM. I get to spend 14 hours with her. I called up my parents and told them that there was a glitch and I will be home tomorrow morning, and also told them to contact Mr. Conrad Burns, and tell him that his daughter is with me and a part of the same technical glitch. My dad knew Conrad. We spent time at the departure lounge, playing cards, and chess. We had dinner at the airport cafeteria - a cheese sandwich and a can of Soda each. I was from Hyderabad, she was from Darjeeling. We talked about our lives, School, and friends. We boarded the Najran flight around 3:30 AM. After we buckled in for a 90-minute flight, she said "thank you for not booking us for the 7 'o'clock flight. I am glad that I spent this time with you." I was shocked that she figured out my devious yet harmless manipulation. After we arrived in Najran, both of our dads were there to receive us at the airport. Just before she got into her dad's car, she kissed me on the cheek with a "thank you" whisper. While driving home, my dad said "I do not think there was a technical glitch. Who do you think you are fooling, son". I am sure my mom put this idea in his head, there was no way my dad could that smart. By the way, Dolly had her wallet the whole time. During the customs check, while the officials inspected her bag, she had left it in her suitcase and forgot where she had kept it.
